Complimentary Thermo-Calc Licenses Support Research Beneficial for Sustainability in Transport and Energy Sector

Gourav Mundhra is a joint PhD student in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National Tsing Hua University. He resides in India and is the lead author of the article “Design of a novel Al–Ti–Zr light-weight alloy: CALPHAD and experiments” which was recently published in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds by Elsevier.

“Currently, I am in my residence at Kolkata due to the nationwide lockdown in India. It is hot and sunny here. I am getting on with my research in confinement. The heart of my research is to design novel alloys by combining CALPHAD thermodynamic calculations with experiments for advanced structural applications. To achieve this, I perform deeper microstructural understanding using Electron microscopy. Understanding the deformation behaviour of these novel alloys is another prime goal of my research.

The results of my research will be beneficial for the transport and energy sector.

Lighter alloys mean higher performance, lesser emission and greater efficiency. This will be helpful in reducing global warming and pollution. It will also contribute to finding solutions for sustainable energy.

Gourav Mundhra studies novel alloys, which will contribute to improved performance and enhanced efficiency for the transport and energy industry.

At the moment, I am spending a lot of time learning new skills and performing simulations. I use Thermo-Calc software to perform equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamic calculations within the CALPHAD framework. I use both graphical and console mode. The complimentary Thermo-Calc software license has been a great help for me. I am spending a lot of time reading about new developments in the field and CALPHAD community, learning new skills and performing simulations. In that way, I am lucky. I can get on with my work. I am also in contact with my peers via social media and digital platforms. Still, I wish that everything restores to normalcy soon.”

Gourav Mundhra is one of many from our community who requested a complimentary Thermo-Calc license in order to pursue his research during the coronavirus confinement. These licenses are temporary and for all customers with network licenses. Please contact info@thermocalc.com for further information.
